A little beer fueled at the end, the 5 of us discussed the direction the station should go. A fair few people backed out at the last minute and couldn’t make it.
Rob – new website in the works, need to create further links with students union groups and clubs, faculty, community organisations etc for programming contributions. need to collaborate with the students union to introduce a referendum so that student can vote yes or no as to the implementation of a small student levy to fund the operations of a radio station. need to launch recruitmant campaign, need to launch promotional campaign.
Cam – Discussed formation of Society to apply for Not-for-Profit Tax status for initial fundraising for capital costs. In the future create a separate society to run the station. Radio Club would not be dissolved but would be focused on promoting the station on campus (plus the club would allow for keeping some of the perks that clubs get). Brought up Central Okanagan Radio Society which operates CBC repeater stations as possible friendly society.
Jim – Helped guide discussion with his experience on CRTC applications. He feels we have an excellent chance at getting the license.
We discussed whether large scale funding from the school might obligate us to follow their programming choices.
We discussed the letters that Amanda did up to give to groups to both raise awareness of the internet station and future radio station but also ask them for letters of support for the intent of the station. Everyone thought it was a good idea.
We discussed approaching departments at the University for help with Finances. We also discussed meeting with the President (aim high) to make her/him aware of our initiative.
Action Items
Cam – Draft Society Bylaws and such
Rob – Keep internet station alive and keep the momentum moving. Maybe set up meeting with President of new school.
Everybody else – We need some people willing to take the bullet and be on the boring admin side of setting up a society. It would probably mean a meeting every month or two months and mandatory attendance at the Annual General Meeting of all the members every year. Plus you would be in charge of stuff.
