January 31, 2007 – CIRO Newsletter The next CIRO benefit is this Saturday February 3 at the Well Pubfeaturing Penticton artists FAKING DAVID and AARON GOODWIN, there may ormay not be another artist. The cost is 7 bucks at the door, the showstarts at 8pm. The Well is located at 3300 University Way (at UBCOCampus). Check out Faking David at www.fakingdavid.com. In other news, Lucy and the Student Union Radio Club component of CIRO hascommitted to revitalizing the online broadcast. They have revamped the waythey deliver programming via the internet. A variety of new and oldpre-produced shows are currently available for download and streaming onCIRO’s website at http://www.ciro.ca/program_guide.htm. The “InternetRadio Station” component of CIRO is very much in the developmental stage. Its feasibility and relevance will be evaluated on a continual basis. Itssuccess and continued expansion will ultimately depend onstudent/community feedback and input, and the level of student andcommunity support and interest in producing and listening to shows. So... CIRO is currently offering students, like minded organizations, andthe general public an opportunity to produce and host a feature show, commentary, or regular program to be featured at www.ciro.ca. Essentially,we are looking to showcase programming that is different in style and substance from the programming offered by other types of media outlets. Originality and diversity is highly valued. To get a better idea of what were looking for, visit the “about us” section of our webpage(http://www.ciro.ca/about_us.htm). Checking out our constitutionand bylaws wouldn’t hurt either. CIRO will provide student and community members with training in radio production and access to the airwaves (ornetwaves in this case) so that their perspectives and concerns can reach a niche audience and the general public. If you are a UBCO student that wants to host his or her own regular show or feature program contact Lucy Rodina at programming@ciro.ca. If you are not a UBCO student and would like to host your own show contact Rob Madu at rmadu @ ciro.ca. Please give us a brief description of your show and indicate “Show Proposal” in the subject box. CIRO’s main focus is still the establishment of an FM Campus/CommunityRadio Station. To that end there have been some changes to our administration as a result of our AGM in November. The current directorsof the Campus/Community Radio Okanagan Society are as follows: Rob Madu: Chair Lucy Rodina: Vice Chair Cam Baughen: Secretary/Treasurer Alex Lingnau Bud Mortenson Michelle GeeBobby Chavarie The next important step in our journey of starting an “alternative” radiostation is the completion of our business plan that will outline start upcosts, annual station operating costs, and plans to secure the necessary funds to accomplish the above (among other things). We have a good idea of how all that is going to work, we just need to get it on paper which iswhat Cam and I (mostly Cam) are in the process of doing. Rest assured that said business plan is being completed as fast as humanly possible so as to get on with things. Lastly, for monthly meeting info please check the website, that info willbe updated in the near future.
Thanks for your continued support, Rob Madu Campus/Community Radio Okanagan SocietyChair rmadu @ ciro.ca www.ciro.ca
