Conversation with Rob in Winnipeg
Thanks Rob. I already read through that and have a link for it on my blogbut I'm not sure I passed it on.We'll look at what we need exactly and follow up with you. Cheers, Cam
Their main concerns will probably lie in privacy and ethics. Our board adopted a 'Code of Ethical Fundraising' that basically is a statement that we'll be good with peoples data. The code we adopted is here: http://www.imaginecanada.ca/page.asp?ethical_fundraising_code_one We're not members of 'imagine canada' but we adopted the code anyhow. It might be a good move to give the University some assurance that you are serious. Rob
Thanks Rob, I've cc'ed our Board member from the University. That sounds like the format he has been proposing but the University has alot of questions. Thanks for all your help and if your funding agreement or letter of understanding shows up we'd probably still love to see it.
Cheers, Cam Sec/Tre CIRO www.ciro.ca
Hey Cam, I'm not sure if I can find the document but I'll try. Our agreement is actually through the student association, the University doesn't formally recognize us as being separate ( pretty dumb for them but thats how they want it...) Heres how it works for us - basically we offer tax receipts to donors at Fundrive. All the pledges for tax receipts go to the University and the University issues the receipts. The University takes the money which we have to ask for back as a grant (right now they're sitting on over $20,000 of CKUW's fundrive money). For the University this works because they add our donors to their funding lists. This has added hundreds of names in the last 7 years and thousands of dollars to their fundraising goals (without very much work). This is good for U of W because the more donations they get the easier it is to get government cash and more donations. I'll see if I can find the agreement, but hopefully thats enough info for you to go on for now. If you want to talk about this more feel free to call me: 204-786-9782 Rob

We've started talking to our University about funding arrangements. Would you be able to forward us your agreement with the Univeristy in regards to donations? I'm hoping it is a public document. We think this will work but we need some evidence to convince them. Any responce yay or nay would be appreciated. Cheers, Cam
Nice MySpace by the way. You Say Party! We Say Die! rocks.
Yeah, it works good for the University because they add our donors names to their roles - which looks good when they got to the gov't for support etc... Good luck, happy to help out Rob
Cameron Baughen wrote: Thank you very much Rob. I assume you must have a written agreement with the University. We are going to have to do it our own way but if you have any further info and could let us know that would be great. It looks like we will apply to the CRA for the hell of it but it would be nice if there was another way.
Thanks, Cam Hi Cameron, we work with the University of Winnipeg to be able to issue tax receipts. CKUW is not a charity, but all Universities qualify. Some donations to CKUW go through the University and are granted back to us, allowing our donors to get tax receipts. Gettting charity status can be a lot of work, good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions. Rob
Hi Rob. I got your name from Chad Saunders at CJSW. I'm the sec/trea for CIRO Radio Project trying to get a station established at the new UBC-O campus in Kelowna. I am looking at charity status for the society. I can't find you guy on the CRA list of charities. How are you able to avoid the tax man? Thanks, Cam Baughen
